BERG PlayBase Accessories

The frame is the start. What hangs off it is the point. Swings, a climbing wall, gym rings, a boxing bag, a basketball hoop, a slide — add them, swap them, move them as the children grow.

Almost everything below fits every PlayBase frame — Wall, Medium, Large and Extra Large. The exceptions are listed in the next section, and on each product page.

What fits which frame

Four things don't fit every size:

• Hammock — Large frame only.
• Climbing net — comes in M, L and XL, matched to your frame. No Wall version.
• Soccer target net — also M, L and XL, matched to your frame. No Wall version.
• Platform and slide — no Wall version, and children reach the platform by the frame's ladder. That's TL and LL frames; a TT frame has two tumble bars and no ladder.

Everything else fits whatever frame you have. The frame size decides how many you can have up at once, not which ones.

How many can you have up at once?

BERG measures this in PlayBase bars. Each frame has a fixed number, and each accessory needs a certain number of them. Accessories that move a lot — anything you swing in or hit — need more room.

Worth knowing on a Wall frame: the nest swing, boxing bag and fitness rope each take all three bars, so any one of them fills it.

You can own more than fits at once and rotate them — plenty of families swap the hammock in for summer and the boxing bag in for winter.

Carabiners aren't included

Worth knowing before you order. Carabiner hooks come as standard with a PlayBase frame, but not with accessories bought on their own.

If you're adding to an existing frame and you've no spares, order carabiners at the same time. Ring us and we'll make sure the right ones go in the box.

Swings and hanging

Swing seat — the classic, rated 80kg. The accessory that gets used every day long after the novelty of everything else wears off.

Nest swing — a round mesh nest big enough to lie in, rated 150kg, so two children can genuinely share it. It's the one they fight over.

Baby seat — enclosed with a harness, for the youngest, up to 30kg. The accessory that makes a PlayBase worth buying before a child can walk properly.

Wooden trapeze — hanging, swinging, upside down. Simple and endlessly used.

Hammock — Large frame only. The one accessory that decides the frame size for you if you want it.

Climbing

Climbing wall — textured panel with holds. It clamps to the frame rather than hanging from it, so it doesn't compete with your swings for space.

Climbing net — rope net for climbing and hanging. Easier than a wall for younger children and popular well into the teens. Size-matched to your frame — M, L or XL, with no Wall version.

Monkey bar screw set — the fixings for monkey bar configurations.

Sport

Basketball hoop — the accessory that keeps older children using the frame, covering the gap between growing out of swings and being old enough for the fitness range.

Soccer target net — aiming holes to shoot through, with a second net behind so the ball stays put. Size-matched to Medium, Large or Extra Large.

Fitness

This is the half of the range nobody expects, and it's why plenty of PlayBase buyers are adults.

Most of the fitness accessories are rated 14+ and 100kg. They're for teenagers and adults. For younger children, the gym rings are the ones to buy.

Pull-up bar — steel, fixed, 14+. The pulling half of an upper-body setup.

Dip bar — parallel bars for dips, 14+. The pushing half.

Wooden gym rings — rated 3+ and 80kg, so they work for a child learning to hang as well as for adult training.

Boxing bag — 21kg, heavy enough to stay put while you work combinations. 14+, and it needs 3 bars.

Fitness rope — despite the name, a suspension trainer: two straps with handles for rows, presses, curls and squats. You set the difficulty by changing your body angle. 14+, and it needs 3 bars.

Resistance bands — a set of three loop bands in different strengths. Looped over the pull-up bar, they're how most adults get to their first pull-up.

For a full outdoor gym alongside the children's accessories, a Large or Extra Large is the frame to look at.

Platform and slide

Platform and slide — an elevated platform with a slide off it, which turns the frame into a fort. It has a water connection, so a garden hose makes it a water slide in summer.

No Wall version, and it needs a ladder to reach the platform — a TL or LL frame, not a TT.

Top frame and side frame — structural sections for extending or reconfiguring.

Ring us before ordering either. What fits depends on your frame and how it's set up, and it's a short conversation that saves a return.

Where to start

Toddler — baby seat and nest swing. Both used daily.

Primary school — swing seat, climbing wall, trapeze, gym rings.

Nine to fourteen — climbing net, basketball hoop, soccer target net. This is the stretch where swings stop and the fitness range hasn't started yet.

Teenagers and adults — pull-up bar, dip bar, boxing bag, fitness rope, resistance bands.

Mixed household — this is where the Large or Extra Large earns its money. Six or eight bars covers two generations without anybody taking turns.

Common questions

Will this accessory fit my frame?

Almost certainly. Four exceptions: the hammock needs the Large; the climbing net and soccer target net come in M, L and XL matched to your frame, with no Wall version; and the platform and slide has no Wall version and needs a ladder, so it suits TL and LL frames, not TT. Everything else fits every size.

How do I know which accessories I already have room for?

Count the bars your frame has free and check what the accessory needs — a swing seat takes two, a nest swing, boxing bag or fitness rope takes three. Or send us a photo of the frame and we'll tell you what's free and what fits.

What age are they for?

It varies by accessory. Swings, the climbing wall, trapeze and gym rings are 3+. The baby seat is for the youngest, up to 30kg. The pull-up bar, dip bar, boxing bag, fitness rope and resistance bands are 14+. Each product page has the rating.

Can I add accessories later?

That's the whole idea. Start with the frame and two or three, and add as the children grow or the budget allows. We stock the range, so there's no rush.

Can I swap them around?

Yes, and people do — seasonally, or when interests change. Taking one off and putting another on is a few minutes' work.

Do they fit a non-BERG climbing frame?

Some will. BERG's swings, trapeze and rings hang from carabiners, so they'll work on most frames with suitable attachment points — and they're a considerable upgrade on what comes with a wooden swing set.

The structural accessories are different: the climbing wall, climbing net, soccer target net, platform and slide, and frame sections are made for the PlayBase and won't fit anything else. Send us a photo of your frame and we'll tell you which is which.

Do they survive Irish weather?

They're built for year-round outdoor use. Fabric items like the hammock last longer if you bring them in over winter, but they don't have to come in.

What maintenance do they need?

Very little. Check the attachment points and any ropes once a year, wipe down seats and handles occasionally, and look things over after a storm.
