Why three bands
One band is either too easy for some exercises or too hard for others. Three strengths means you pick the right one for the movement, and move up as you get stronger instead of buying another set.
Use the lightest for shoulders and warm-ups, the middle for most upper-body work, and the heaviest for legs and assisted pull-ups.
The way to your first pull-up
This is what most people end up using them for. Loop a band over the pull-up bar, put a foot or knee in the bottom of it, and the band takes some of your weight at the hardest part of the movement.
Start on the heaviest band, drop to a lighter one as you improve, and eventually take it away. It's how most adults get from none to their first proper pull-up, and it works the same way on the dip bar.
Everything else they do
- Warm-ups before a session on the bar, rope or bag
- Presses, rows and pull-aparts anchored to the frame, for shoulders and upper back
- Squats and glute work with the band under your feet or around your legs
- Anywhere else. They weigh 0.7kg for the set, so they go in a bag for holidays or the gym.
