Rated 14+ and 100kg. Like the pull-up bar, this is an adult accessory rather than a children's one.

Specification

What dips do

Chest, triceps and shoulders, using your own bodyweight. They're to the upper body's pushing muscles what pull-ups are to the pulling ones — which is why the two bars belong together.

They're also unforgiving. A press-up lets you cheat; a dip doesn't. That's what makes them worth doing and why progress on them is obvious.

New to them? Start with your feet on the ground taking some weight, and take less as you get stronger. Resistance bands work for assistance here too.

Bar and bar together

Pull-up bar and dip bar between them cover the whole upper body — pull and push, back and chest, biceps and triceps.

Add gym rings and a fitness rope and there's very little an indoor gym gives you that the frame doesn't, except a monthly bill.

That's four accessories. On a Large or Extra Large frame there's still room for the children's things alongside.

14+ and 100kg

Both limits matter. The 14+ rating is because a fixed bar at adult height isn't a child's accessory — if you want something a younger child can use, the gym rings are rated 3+.

The 100kg is the load limit. Dips put your entire bodyweight through two points, so it's the number to check rather than assume.

Space around it

Clear ground beneath, and enough room either side that you're not catching an elbow on the frame. Dips need less space than swings but more than you'd think, because your legs swing back as you go down.

• Gym rings — ring dips are considerably harder, and the children can use them too
