Above Ground Trampolines

The traditional installation, and the most popular in Ireland. The frame stands on legs, so there's no digging, no groundworks and no installer. Two or three hours with two adults and the children are on it the same day.

It's also the only installation you can take with you if you move.

Why above ground

• Up this weekend. No excavation, no drainage, no waiting on a contractor. All tools are in the box.
• It moves with you. Comes apart and goes back together, which makes it the right choice if you're renting or might move within a few years.
• The trampoline is the whole cost. No pit, no digger hire, no drainage materials.
• Easy to maintain. You can get underneath it — springs, mat and padding are all straightforward to reach and replace.
• Reversible. If it ends up in the wrong corner of the garden, move it.

What to be aware of

It must be anchored. An above-ground trampoline stands 80-105cm off the lawn with a net on top. In Irish wind that's a sail, and weight is not what holds it down — every winter brings reports of unanchored trampolines through fences and onto cars.

Fit ground anchors the day you assemble it and check them after every named storm. Storm damage to an unanchored trampoline isn't covered by the warranty, so this is the one accessory we'd call essential rather than optional.

A ladder is worth having. At that height, children under about ten will otherwise climb the frame padding to get on, which wears it at the point that protects the frame. See BERG ladders.

It's visible. A 14ft frame standing a metre high is a substantial object in a suburban garden. If that's the deciding factor, inground or flatground sit far lower.

Longer fall. Leaving the mat means a metre to the ground rather than 10-20cm. The safety net is what manages that, and it's included on most models.

Shape and size

In BERG's naming, Grand means oval and Ultim means rectangular. Round suits most gardens; oval fits a strip; rectangular gives the most powerful bounce.

The rule: 2 metres of clear space on every side, so measure your flattest clear area and subtract 4 metres from each dimension. Our size guide covers it properly.

• Level ground — a flat clear area with 2m around every side
• Two adults and a few hours — three people on the larger sizes
• An anchor kit — essential in Ireland, not optional
• A ladder — for children under about ten
• A spring puller tool — turns the longest part of assembly into the quickest
