It clamps to the frame rather than hanging from it — which means it doesn't use any of your swing positions.

It doesn't use a swing position

Worth knowing before you plan your frame. Swings, rings, a trapeze and a nest all hang from the top bar and use carabiner points. The climbing wall clamps to the frame itself.

So it doesn't compete with anything. A Medium with two swings up can still take a climbing wall.

The holds move

This is the part that matters and it's the reason to buy this rather than a fixed panel.

The holds unbolt and reposition, so you can set an easy route for a four-year-old, then move them further apart and make it properly hard when they've worked it out. A wall a child has solved is a wall they stop using; a wall you can change isn't.

It also means two children of different ages can each have a route.

Bamboo, not plastic

A slatted bamboo panel rather than a moulded plastic one. It looks like a piece of garden joinery rather than playground equipment, which matters if the frame is visible from the house.

Bamboo is also dense, weather-tolerant and doesn't go brittle in UV the way cheap plastic panels do. At 28.4kg this is a substantial object, not a sheet.

Not just for children

100kg user weight, tested to 250kg. Bouldering is a full-body exercise and adults use this more than you'd think — it's grip, core and shoulders in one, and it's the least boring way to train any of them.

Space and surface

Clear ground at the base, and grass rather than paving. Climbers come off walls — that's part of it — and the landing wants to be soft.

Allow around 1.5 metres clear in front, and don't site it where someone dropping off would land against a fence or another accessory.

• Climbing net — the easier climb, and good for younger children before they take to the wall
• Gym rings — grip and upper body, and they pair naturally with climbing
• Wooden trapeze — for the hanging half of it
• Fitness rope — another way up, and another grip challenge
