The 50kg limit means don't hang off it
This is the number to pay attention to, and it isn't about who can shoot.
50kg is the load the hoop is rated to take. Anyone can play; what nobody should do is hang off the rim — and that's exactly what a twelve-year-old who's just worked out they can reach it will try.
Worth saying out loud to them once, rather than finding out when the backboard comes off the frame.
Why it earns its place
Most PlayBase accessories suit a particular stage. Swings are for small children; rings and bars are for teenagers and adults. The hoop sits in the gap between them, which is the hardest stretch to cover.
Around nine or ten, children stop wanting to swing and there's usually a year or two where the frame goes quiet. A hoop is what fills it — it's competitive, it works alone or with friends, and it doesn't feel like playground equipment.
It's also one of the few accessories that gets used by visiting children, which is the real test of whether a garden gets played in.
Space in front
More than most accessories need. Allow three to four metres clear in front of the board so there's room to shoot from a distance and chase a rebound.
Think about where the ball goes when it misses. A hoop sited next to a greenhouse or a flowerbed will cause arguments.
