Why the Large frame only

It's a span question rather than a strength one. BERG rates the hammock at eight PlayBase bars — against two for a swing seat and three for a nest swing.

A hammock has to hang between two points far enough apart for someone to lie flat, so it takes up most of the frame. The Large is the one it's designed around.

If a hammock is part of what you're picturing, it decides your frame size. That's worth knowing before you order a Medium.

What it's for

Everything else on a PlayBase is active. This is the opposite, and it changes who uses the frame.

Adults use it. Usually with a book, usually alone, usually while the children are on the other end of the frame. It's the reason a climbing frame stops being children's equipment and becomes part of the garden.

Teenagers use it. Around twelve or thirteen, children stop swinging and start lying about. A hammock is the accessory that keeps a PlayBase relevant through that.

And younger children use it as a den, a boat, or somewhere to read. Rarely as a hammock.

Practical notes

100kg — comfortably an adult, or two children.

White, rather than the grey of most PlayBase accessories. It shows dirt more than grey would, so it's worth bringing in over winter — though it doesn't have to come in.

Clicks on and off in a couple of minutes, so it can come down when you want the frame back for something else.

It takes the whole frame. With the hammock up, there isn't much room for anything else. Most people treat it as a summer accessory and swap it for swings the rest of the year — which is exactly what the modular system is for.
