If you've been looking at spring trampolines and wondering why this costs more, the short answer is that there's nothing hard around the edge of the mat. On a conventional trampoline the springs and frame sit right where a falling jumper lands, which is why they need thick padding over them. Springfree moves the frame below and outside the jumping area entirely, and replaces the springs with flexible composite rods underneath. There's nothing to pad because there's nothing to hit.

Will it fit your garden?

Springfree specifies 14ft × 14ft — about 4.3m × 4.3m — for the R54, including clearance.

That's meaningfully less than a spring trampoline with an 8ft mat would need. The FlexiNet gives when someone hits it instead of stopping them dead, and there's no rigid frame or spring ring at the mat edge, so Springfree can specify a tighter footprint. It's the reason a Springfree often fits a garden where a conventional trampoline of the same mat size doesn't.

Bigger than it sounds

Springfree's mat extends right to the edge of the frame, because there are no springs taking up the outer ring and no padding covering them. On a conventional 8ft trampoline you lose a good band around the outside to springs and pads.

The practical result is that the R54's usable jumping area is comparable to a 10ft spring trampoline (Springfree's own comparison) — so in a small garden you get the bounce of a bigger trampoline in a smaller footprint. That's the main reason people choose it over an 8ft spring model.

SoftEdge mat

UV-stabilised and flexible right to the edge, so the jumping surface doesn't stop where a spring trampoline's does.

40 composite mat rods

Fibreglass rods beneath the mat do the job springs do, with no metal near the jumper and no pinch points. They're individually replaceable, so one broken rod doesn't mean a new trampoline.

FlexiNet enclosure

The net poles are flexible rather than rigid, so the enclosure gives when someone hits it instead of stopping them dead. The net is also inside the mat edge, which means a jumper can't land between mat and net.

Hidden frame

Galvanised steel, positioned below and outside the jumping surface, well away from where anyone lands.

Who it suits

The R54 is aimed at younger children and smaller gardens. The bounce is softer than a large spring trampoline's, which is exactly what you want for a three or four-year-old finding their feet, and less of what a twelve-year-old is after.

If you have older children or teenagers, look at the R79 10ft or the R132 13ft Jumbo instead — same construction, more room and more bounce. If the garden is long rather than square, the O77 oval may use the space better.

Assembly and siting

Springfree trampolines take longer to assemble than spring models — the rods have to be fitted individually and they're under tension. Allow a good few hours with two people, and follow the sequence in the manual rather than working around the circle.

On an exposed or coastal site, fit Springfree anchors. Irish storms move trampolines, and a hidden frame doesn't make it heavier.

Common questions

Is it worth the extra over a spring trampoline?

It depends what you're weighing. A Springfree costs more than a comparable spring model, and the case for it is the construction — no springs, no frame near the jumper, no padding to perish. If safety is the deciding factor, it's the strongest argument on the market. If budget is the constraint, a BERG is an excellent trampoline and we sell plenty of them.

How long do the rods last?

Years, and they're covered by the 10-year warranty. When one does break it's replaceable on its own — the rods are the most commonly ordered Springfree part and the cheapest.

Can I leave it out over winter?

Yes, it's built for year-round outdoor use. Clear leaves and standing water off the mat, and see our guide to winter care if you'd rather pack it away.

What's the model code for ordering parts?

R54. Keep it somewhere — parts are model-specific and it's the first thing we'll ask for. It's also on a label on the frame.
