An 8ft trampoline is the usual choice for a smaller Irish garden and younger children. It's big enough for proper bouncing and small enough to leave room for everything else. Here's what's worth buying at around 8ft, how much space you'll need, and when it makes sense to go a size up.

How much space does an 8ft trampoline need?
Allow 2 metres of clear space on every side, away from fences, walls, trees, sheds and patios. An 8ft (244cm) round trampoline therefore needs a clear, level area of roughly 6.5m x 6.5m. For an oval or rectangular trampoline, add 4 metres to both the length and the width.
To work out the largest size that fits, measure your flattest clear area and subtract 4 metres from each side. If that leaves more than 2.7m, a 9ft may fit, and the extra jumping space is noticeable. There's more detail in our trampoline size guide.

1. Springfree R54 8ft Round: the safety-first choice
Springfree trampolines have no springs. Flexible rods sit under the edge of the mat, out of the jumping area, so there are no springs to land on and no hard frame edge to fall onto. Those are the two things children most often get hurt on. The net is held up by flexible rods too, so it gives rather than stopping a child dead.
The R54 is the smallest round model in the range and suits younger children in a compact garden. We're Ireland's only Springfree stockist.
2. Springfree O77 Oval (8 x 11ft): for narrower gardens
The O77 is 8ft wide but longer than it is wide, so it suits a garden that's more of a strip than a square. The extra length gives more jumping room than an 8ft round without needing any more width. It has the same springless design as the R54.
3. Springfree O92 Oval (8 x 13ft): when two children share it
Still 8ft wide, but with a longer jumping surface again. Families with two children often choose it because each child has more room. The safety rule is still one jumper at a time, but the extra length makes turn-taking and games work better. It needs a longer garden, so measure before you buy.
4. BERG Favorit 9ft (270cm): best value
BERG doesn't make an exact 8ft round, and the nearest size is the Favorit at 270cm (9ft). If your garden can take the extra 30cm or so, it's the best-value option here. You get a galvanised steel frame, a safety net, padding over the springs, and genuine BERG spare parts held here in Ireland for years to come. The 6.5ft (200cm) Favorit is there if space is really tight.
5. BERG Ultim Favorit InGround: low and tidy
If you'd rather the trampoline didn't dominate a small garden, an inground model sits low to the lawn. Children can step on and off without a ladder, and it catches far less wind. The Ultim is rectangular, so it fits neatly against a boundary, and the smallest size is 280 x 190cm. Inground trampolines need a pit dug, so ask us to put you in touch with an installer if you want one fitted.

Choosing the right one
Round, oval or rectangular?
Round is the most common shape. The bounce draws jumpers back towards the centre, which is forgiving for younger children. Oval gives you more length without more width, which suits narrow gardens. Rectangular gives an even bounce across the whole mat and sits neatly against a fence or wall. Our shape guide goes into more detail.
Springs or springless?
A good sprung trampoline like BERG is safe with proper padding and a net, and it costs less. Springfree removes springs and hard edges from the jumping area altogether, which is why families who put safety above everything else choose it.
Above ground or inground?
Above ground is quicker to set up and can be moved. Inground sits low, looks tidier and handles wind better, but it's permanent and needs digging.
Check the user weight
Every trampoline has a maximum user weight, and it's listed on the product page. Check it against whoever will be using the trampoline in a few years' time, not just today.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 8ft trampoline big enough?
For younger children, yes. As children get older and taller they'll want more room, so if your garden can fit a 10ft or 11ft, it's worth thinking about whether they'll outgrow the 8ft within a few years.
What age is an 8ft trampoline suitable for?
It suits roughly ages 4 to 10, depending on the child and the model. Always check the manufacturer's minimum age and maximum user weight.
Is an 8ft trampoline good for flips?
No. Somersaults and flips on a home trampoline are a common cause of serious injury at any size, and they shouldn't be attempted without proper coaching.
How many children can use it at once?
One at a time. Most trampoline injuries happen when several people are on the mat together.
