Learn How to Backflip on a Trampoline
Owning a trampoline is great fun for a family. They can bounce away on the trampoline, trying to compete with each other to get the highest jump. While it is fun to just jump on the trampoline, there is so much more you can learn to do.
And you can leave the rest of the family in awe of your new skills. You can begin to learn some easy new tricks such as a sit jump which is fun to do. You can then build yourself up to try a backflip.
Now if you have already learnt how to do a front flip on the trampoline, you might think you are ready for a front flip. But it’s a lot more intense for the body and could lead to a serious injury if you don’t do it properly.
Therefore, we have come up with an easy guide to wow with a backflip on the trampoline.
First- Prepare, plan and practice
You can’t just complete a backflip on a trampoline if you haven’t prepared for it first.
It takes some planning, practising and preparing before you do the trick independently and safely on the trampoline. Here are some of our ideas of how you can get ready for the challenging trick.
Work with others
It’s a good idea not to work alone when you first try and do a backflip. You want to ensure that if something goes wrong then someone is there to help you.
Also, when they are watching and guiding you, they might spot you doing something incorrectly and then you can make a change before trying the move. They could also help you when it comes to rotation and even assist you when you are trying to manoeuvre your feet during the flip.
Of course, they need to take steps to protect themselves so they aren’t injured when you are doing the move. They could always stand on the side and then only assist if necessary. It’s also a good idea to work with someone who knows how to do a backflip. Then they can advise with knowledge of what you should be doing to complete the move.
Warm up your body first
You don’t want to go headfirst into a move when your body is not ready. You could end up with an injury and suffering for the next few weeks. Therefore, before you even attempt the move, you should get your body and mind adjusted to the trampoline. Go for a simple jump and get a feel of how the trampoline feels.
You can also stretch and warm up your muscles and move your legs around to get them ready for the jump. Get yourself comfortable and familiar with the trampoline before attempting the jump.
Learn how to do a backdrop
There’s no way you can do a backflip before you have mastered a backdrop.
Therefore, you need to learn this skill first before moving onto the more technical move. You should try a simple seat drop and then fall onto your back and then move on to the backdrop with your legs up.
It’s often a tad daunting going backwards on the trampoline, so attempt this first and get your confidence up about going backwards on the trampoline.
Next- try the moves before pulling them all together
You can’t just go straight into a backflip until you have practised the various moves that make up a backflip. Therefore, here are the various moves to try to help you get to the final step of the backflip.
A sideways handspring
You could try a sideways handspring which will help you to get used to doing the same type of move. All you need to do is jump up straight and then manoeuvre yourself over the shoulder when you get to the height of your jump.
You should keep your hands over your head and look behind you to ensure your body goes in this direction. You should land on your hands and then your knees before going back to standing.
A back handspring
You could do then move onto a back handspring once you have mastered the sideways handspring. Look up while you go and make sure that you complete the jump when you are at the key point of the jump.
Don’t jump too close to the edge as you don’t want to fall backwards off the trampoline. It’s important to jump up first before completing the back handspring. You should practice these both until you get to the point where you land on both of your hands and feet.
It’s so important to use your abs and hips to help you to complete this.
Get to new heights and practice pushing backwards
You need to ensure you are going as high as possible if you are going to be able to complete a backflip. Therefore, do push yourself to try and get to new heights on the trampoline. When you are jumping make sure you lean back and practice this movement. You want to look up to the sky and bend your knees.
Finally, it’s time to complete the backflip
You are now ready to attempt the trick. If you struggle the first time, keep practising and if you get frustrated, take a break and come back to practising again.
Get yourself into position
Firstly get yourself into the right position with you ready to look backwards at the floor where you will land. Make sure you have allowed yourself enough space and then go for the big bounce to ensure you get a good height ready to go over.
Go for it
Your first flip will not be 100% perfect but make sure that you aim to land on your feet. You can use your arms to help you get around and to land on the trampoline safely.
Once you have mastered it, you will find that you will go from landing on your hands and knees to landing safely on your feet. You have done it!
And remember if you are struggling, try and get a higher jump, practice thinking positively and also talk it through with others. After all, they might help you find a technique that works for you to complete the perfect backflip.
