Sizes and the space they need

Every trampoline needs 2 metres of clear space on all sides. Because these aren't square, the space you need isn't either — check both dimensions.

The hole is narrower than the frame — the legs rest on ground at the rim, so you dig inside the trampoline's footprint. Measure before you order, and measure carefully, because this one can't be moved afterwards. Send us your dimensions and we'll tell you honestly which fits.

What InGround gives you

The frame sits in a pit with the mat 10-20cm above the lawn, rather than on legs at a metre.

• Far less wind load. A low frame gives an Atlantic gale very little to catch. On an exposed or coastal site this is the main argument.
• Shorter fall. If someone leaves the mat it's 10-20cm to the grass, not a metre.
• A step, not a climb. No ladder, and accessible from any side — which matters for younger children and for anyone less mobile.
• It doesn't dominate the garden. Garden furniture can sit near it, and it reads as a feature rather than a structure.

Compared with FlatGround, which sits completely flush, InGround needs a shallower pit and simpler groundworks. Compared with above ground, it's permanent — that's the trade.

Why oval rather than round

On a round trampoline the springs pull inward from all directions, so the bounce always returns you toward the centre. Forgiving, and right for younger children.

On an oval frame the springs run closer to parallel along the length, so energy stays nearer where you land. More power, more control, and the full length of the mat is usable rather than just the middle. An oval also fits a garden that's longer than it is wide, which most Irish gardens are.

The trade-off: more power means less margin. This isn't the right first trampoline for a five-year-old. If your children are young and it's for general play, a round Champion costs less and suits them better, and we'd say so on the phone.

What Grand Champion means

It's the top of BERG's residential range, above Champion and Favorit:

The frame is hot-dip galvanised inside and out, then powder-coated black. Springs carry 5 years; mat, padding and net 2 years.

Safety net options

• Deluxe — curved poles outside the jumping area, self-closing entrance rather than a zip. Right for children up to about 14 and recreational use.
• Deluxe XL — around 30cm taller. On an oval people genuinely get higher than on a round, so this is the one for teenagers or anyone practising tricks.
• No net — available on all sizes, and cleaner to look at. Only sensible where the users are experienced teenagers or adults.

A net can be added later if circumstances change, so the no-net option isn't a permanent decision.

Installation

An inground trampoline needs a pit dug to the dimensions in the table above. Depth is 80cm across all three oval sizes, against a full metre for FlatGround, which is why InGround is the more feasible of the two for most sites.

Drainage is the part that decides whether it works. Irish clay doesn't drain freely, and a pit without proper drainage fills with water after heavy rain. This is the single most common failure with inground installations and it's entirely avoidable.

DIY is feasible with a mini-digger, a spirit level and a couple of days, if your soil drains and you're comfortable with groundworks. Ring us during assembly if you get stuck.

Maintenance

• Weekly: clear debris, and check for water pooling — that's your early warning on drainage
• Monthly: spring tension, padding condition, drainage clear, tighten loose bolts
• Seasonally: clean the mat, inspect springs and net attachment points, clear the drainage system properly
• Annually: full bolt check, frame and mat stitching inspection
• Winter: brush off heavy snow, keep drainage running through freeze-thaw. The net stays up — BERG rates it for winter.

Looked after, expect 12-15 years. The wear parts are all replaceable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission?

Generally no — a trampoline isn't a permanent structure in planning terms. Check with your council if you're in a conservation area, and allow a sensible distance from the boundary.

Can I install it in clay soil?

Yes, and plenty of our customers do. Clay makes the drainage design critical rather than optional — perforated pipe to a working outlet, not just a gravel base. Worth getting right first time, because you can't retrofit drainage without lifting the trampoline.

What if I have a high water table?

It makes drainage design more important and occasionally needs a sump. It's also a reason to choose InGround over FlatGround, since the pit is 20-30cm shallower. Tell us about the site and we'll advise.

Can I install it on a slope?

A slight slope is manageable during excavation. A moderate one means real levelling work and more cost. A steep one isn't practical without terracing.

Can I move it later?

Not realistically. It means disassembly, a new pit and a new drainage system. Treat an inground trampoline as permanent, and choose the position carefully.

Can adults use it?

Yes — 110kg on the 350 × 250cm, 120kg on the two larger ovals. The Grand Champion is the range we'd point adults at. One at a time, as on any trampoline.

Will it rust?

The frame is hot-dip galvanised inside and out and powder-coated over that, with a 13-year warranty covering rust. What causes problems isn't the steel, it's water sitting in a badly drained pit.

Deluxe or Deluxe XL net?

XL for teenagers, athletes, or anyone doing tricks — these shapes produce real height and the extra 30cm is worth having. Deluxe is genuinely good and fine for younger children.
