BERG Ultim Champion InGround — Rectangular

The rectangular Champion, sunk into the ground. In BERG's naming Ultim means rectangular, so this is the competition-shape frame with the pit installation — the mat sits 10-20cm above your lawn instead of a metre up on legs.

It's the combination worth having if you've a serious jumper in the house and you don't want a full-height frame dominating the garden.

Sizes and the space they need

Two metres of clear space on all four sides. A rectangle isn't square, so check both dimensions rather than assuming.

Measure carefully. An inground trampoline can't be shifted once the pit is dug, so this is the one size decision on the site that's genuinely permanent. Send us your dimensions and we'll tell you which fits.

Why rectangular

On a round trampoline the springs pull inward from every direction, so the bounce keeps returning you to the middle. Forgiving, and right for younger children.

On a rectangular frame the springs run in parallel and the energy stays roughly where you land. More height for the same effort, more control, and the whole mat is usable rather than just the centre. It's why competition trampolines are rectangular, and why gymnasts and cheerleaders train on them.

The trade-off is real: more power means less margin for error. This isn't the right first trampoline for a five-year-old. If the children are young and it's for general play, a round Champion costs less and suits them better.

Why inground

An above-ground rectangular trampoline stands 95-105cm tall and, at 5 metres long on the largest size, is a substantial structure in any garden.

• Wind. This is the big one. A rectangular frame presents more surface to the wind than a round of similar footprint, and above ground it needs anchoring without fail. Sunk into the ground, there's very little for a gale to get hold of.
• Fall height. 10-20cm to the grass rather than a metre.
• Access. A step rather than a ladder, from any side.
• Appearance. The difference between a feature and a structure. Garden furniture can sit near the edge.

Against FlatGround, which sits completely flush, InGround needs a shallower pit and simpler groundworks. Against above ground, it's permanent — that's the trade you're making.

Grand, Ultim or plain Champion?

BERG's naming tells you the shape:

All three share the Champion specification — TwinSpring Gold springs, AirFlow mat, 35mm padding, 13-year frame warranty. The difference is the outline, and which one suits you is mostly decided by your garden and who's using it.

Safety net

• Deluxe — 180cm, curved poles outside the jumping area, self-closing entrance instead of a zip. Fine for recreational use and children up to about 14.
• Deluxe XL — 210cm. On a rectangular trampoline people genuinely get higher, and the extra 30cm is worth having for teenagers or anyone practising tricks.

If anyone in the house will be doing anything more than bouncing, take the XL.

Installation

The pit is the job. BERG publishes exact dimensions for each model and we'll send you the drawing for whichever you choose.

Drainage decides whether it works. Irish clay doesn't drain freely, and a pit without drainage fills after heavy rain — at which point the mat sits over standing water and the trampoline is unusable for weeks at a time. A gravel base is the minimum; on clay or a wet site you need perforated pipe running to a soakaway or existing drainage. It's the most common inground failure and it's entirely avoidable.

Rectangular pits also need squaring properly. A round pit that's slightly off doesn't show; a rectangular frame that isn't square won't tension evenly.

Maintenance

• Weekly: clear debris, and check for water pooling — your early warning on drainage
• Monthly: spring tension with attention to the corners, padding condition, drainage clear, bolts tight
• Seasonally: clean the mat, inspect springs and net attachment points, clear the drainage properly, check the frame is still square
• Annually: full bolt check, frame and mat stitching inspection
• Winter: brush off heavy snow, keep drainage running through freeze-thaw. The net stays up.

Looked after, expect 12-15 years. The wear parts are all replaceable.

Common questions

Is rectangular safe for children?

Yes, with the net, supervision and one at a time. But it produces more height than a round for the same effort, so a child confident on a round trampoline needs a fortnight to adjust. We don't recommend it under six.

Do I still need to anchor it?

No — that's one of the advantages of inground. The frame is held by the pit. Above ground, a rectangular trampoline must be anchored.

Can I move it later?

Not realistically. New pit, new drainage, full disassembly. Treat it as permanent and choose the position carefully.

Can adults use it?

Yes, up to 100kg per person. The rectangular bounce suits adult fitness use well. One at a time.

Ultim or Grand?

Garden shape decides it. A rectangle needs a rectangular space; an oval is more forgiving of an awkward plot. If both fit, the rectangle gives more usable mat for the footprint.

Will it rust in the ground?

The frame is hot-dip galvanised inside and out with a 13-year warranty covering rust. What causes trouble isn't the steel, it's water sitting in a badly drained pit.
