Springfree Trampolines for Children with Autism in Ireland

✍️ Gary and the Trampolines Ireland Team — Ireland's leading trampoline experts!

By TrampolinesIreland.com — co-founders of the Bounce for Autism programme, Ireland's only authorised Springfree dealer since 2020.

Trampolining is one of the most consistently recommended therapeutic activities for children with autism spectrum disorder. The benefits are well-evidenced — proprioceptive input, vestibular stimulation, cardiovascular exercise, and the kind of repetitive, predictable movement that many autistic children seek and thrive on. But not all trampolines are equal, and the choice of which trampoline to buy matters significantly for this specific group of children.

This guide explains why Springfree is particularly well suited for children with autism, what to look for when buying, and which models we recommend based on our experience working with autism families across Ireland since 2020.

Our Experience — Bounce for Autism

In 2022, TrampolinesIreland.com co-founded the Bounce for Autism programme in partnership with BERG and the Irish Society for Autism. Since then we've donated trampolines to over 50 special schools across Ireland, worked closely with teachers, therapists, and parents in the autism community, and listened carefully to what works in practice.

We also sponsor the annual Autism NI Glow Walk at Stormont Castle in Belfast — our commitment to the autism community extends beyond selling products.

What follows isn't generic advice — it's what we've learned from hundreds of conversations with Irish autism families.

Why Trampolining Benefits Children with Autism

Proprioceptive input. Bouncing provides deep pressure and movement feedback to the joints and muscles — exactly the kind of sensory input many autistic children actively seek. This proprioceptive stimulation can have a calming, regulating effect on the nervous system, often reducing anxiety and agitation.

Vestibular stimulation. The up-and-down motion of bouncing stimulates the vestibular system (the body's balance and spatial orientation system). Many children with autism have vestibular processing differences, and controlled vestibular input through bouncing can improve balance, coordination, and body awareness over time.

Repetitive movement. The predictable, rhythmic nature of bouncing is intrinsically appealing to many autistic children. Unlike unpredictable play environments, the trampoline offers a consistent sensory experience that can be deeply satisfying and self-regulating.

Physical fitness and motor development. Many children with autism have lower muscle tone and reduced engagement with team sports. Trampolining builds core strength, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness in a solo activity that doesn't require social interaction or rule-following.

Joy. This sounds obvious but it matters. Many autistic children find pure, uncomplicated joy on a trampoline — and for families who spend a lot of time navigating difficult sensory environments, watching their child experience that joy has real value.

Why Springfree Is the Best Choice for Autistic Children

Any quality trampoline can provide the therapeutic benefits above. But Springfree's unique design addresses specific safety concerns that are particularly relevant for children with autism.

No Hard Edges — Anywhere

Children with autism are often drawn to the edges of a trampoline. Some will deliberately seek the sensation of bouncing near the frame, touching the springs, or pressing against the enclosure poles. On a traditional spring trampoline, this behaviour carries real injury risk — metal springs pinch, hard frames cause impact injuries, and rigid poles don't absorb impact the way flexible ones do.

Springfree eliminates all three of these hazards. The composite rods are hidden beneath the mat and completely inaccessible. The steel frame is below the jumping surface level — you cannot land on it or reach it. The FlexiNet enclosure attaches to flexible fibreglass rods that bend on impact rather than presenting a hard surface to collide with.

For a child who seeks edges, Springfree is meaningfully safer than any spring trampoline regardless of padding quality.

Quieter in Use

Metal springs creak and squeak — and this sound gets worse as springs age and oxidise in Irish weather. For children with auditory sensitivities, the noise of a spring trampoline can be a genuine barrier to enjoyment or even a source of distress.

Springfree's rodless system is near-silent. There are no metal components in contact with each other during use. This makes a material difference for children with sensory processing differences around sound.

Smoother, More Predictable Bounce

The composite rod system delivers a smoother, more consistent bounce than metal springs. There are no uneven tension spots, no areas where one worn spring creates a different feel. The bounce is predictable and even across the whole mat surface.

For children who find unpredictable or sudden sensory input distressing, this consistency matters. The bounce feels the same every time, from every part of the mat.

10-Year Warranty Covers Intensive Daily Use

Many autistic children use their trampoline every single day — sometimes multiple times a day. This is exactly the kind of intensive use that exposes the weaknesses of cheaper trampolines within a year or two.

Springfree's 10-year warranty covers frame, mat, composite rods, and FlexiNet enclosure. The trampoline is built to withstand exactly this level of use. You won't be replacing it in three years.

Which Springfree Model for Autism Families?

The right size depends on your garden and your child's needs. Here's our guidance based on experience with autism families specifically:

For Younger Children (Ages 3–8) or Smaller Gardens

Springfree R54 — 8ft Round (€1,399)

The most popular entry-level Springfree for autism families. Despite its compact footprint, the jumping surface is equivalent to a 10ft spring trampoline — no edge padding reduces the usable area. The soft, contained bounce is ideal for younger children or those at the beginning of their trampolining journey. Requires approximately 5.5m x 5.5m of clear garden space.

For Most Families — The Recommended Option

Springfree R79 — 10ft Round (€1,599)

Our most recommended model for autism families. The 10ft round offers generous jumping space that doesn't feel overwhelming, a consistent circular bounce that naturally centres the jumper, and enough room for a parent to join their child on the mat when needed. The round shape with its natural centring effect suits children who may not have full spatial awareness at the edges. Requires approximately 6.1m x 6.1m of clear garden space.

For Siblings Sharing or Older Children

Springfree O77 — 8x11ft Oval (€1,599)

The oval shape suits households where two children will share the trampoline — the dual bounce zones at each end of the oval reduce the likelihood of collision. For a child with autism who needs their own defined space on the trampoline, the oval's distinct zones work well. Also suits long, narrow Irish gardens where a round model doesn't fit. Requires approximately 5.5m x 6.4m of clear garden space.

For Larger Gardens or Older / More Active Children

Springfree R132 — 13ft Round (€2,199)

For older children or teenagers who need maximum space, the 13ft Jumbo delivers a generous jumping area equivalent to a 16ft spring trampoline. The additional space gives confident, active jumpers room to move freely. Requires approximately 7m x 7m of clear garden space.

Practical Tips for Autism Families

Start with short sessions. Some children need time to adjust to the sensory experience of bouncing. Start with 5–10 minutes and build gradually. The goal is regulation, not exhaustion.

Consider the anchor kit essential. The Springfree anchor kit (€135) is the most important accessory — particularly in Ireland's wind. A trampoline that moves underfoot can be distressing for children who need a predictable sensory environment.

The FlexrStep ladder helps with transitions. The FlexrStep ladder (€129) makes getting on and off easier and more predictable. For children who struggle with transitions, a clear, consistent entry and exit routine matters.

A weather cover extends year-round use. Irish weather means the trampoline gets wet. A weather cover (from €239) keeps the mat dry and ready to use immediately — important when a child's need for regulation doesn't accommodate waiting for equipment to dry.

Position it carefully. Place the trampoline on level ground in a position where your child can see the house and you can see the trampoline. Allow at least 2 metres of clearance around all sides. Avoid positioning near fences or walls that could create a collision hazard even with the enclosure net in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is trampolining recommended for children with autism?

Yes — trampolining is widely recommended by occupational therapists and sensory integration specialists as a beneficial activity for children with autism. The proprioceptive and vestibular input from bouncing can have a calming, regulating effect. Always consult your child's occupational therapist or healthcare team for personalised guidance.

What age can a child with autism start using a trampoline?

Springfree's smallest models (R30 and R54) are suitable from age 3 under close adult supervision. The key consideration is not age but readiness — your child's ability to follow basic safety instructions and their physical coordination. Many autism families start with short, supervised sessions and build gradually.
